​Originally known as ‘The Turnpike,’ this cottage served as the 19th-century toll house for Houghton Bridge. As you’ll see from the sign in the dining room, its first custodian, John Davis, arrived in 1814 to manage the passage of horse-drawn trade and "other beasts!" What is now the ‘blue room’ later becoming the village shop and tearoom, famously noted for "taking money from travellers."

 

While we have carefully modernised this Grade II listed home, we have sought to preserve its soul. The décor draws inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, blending contemporary comfort with a deep respect for its loveable heritage.

Nestled within the South Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Flint Cottage offers endless trails and excellent local pubs right on your doorstep. Whether you’ve spent the day exploring or are simply looking to "nestle in" and unwind, we hope this feels like the perfect retreat.

We think it's perfect for those wanting to spend time exploring the fabulous South Downs and then coming back to slip off those walking boots and snuggle up with a well-needed glass of something in front of the fire.

We have loads of things to do in the local area and will happily recommend pubs, restaurants and leisure pursuits so that you can get as much or as little from your stay.

We are happy for you to bring your four-legged friend, but please use your common sense with our soft furnishings ;)
